Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have inherent neurological deficits that impede their social and communication functioning, resulting in certain behavioral oddities. They encounter significant difficulties as they face everyday academic and social demands, posing great challenges to their teachers and parents. Additional support is required to help them to cope with these demands, actualize their potentials, and integrate into the school and wider community. With regard to this situation, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust initiated the “JC A-Connect: Jockey Club Autism Support Network” (JC A-Connect) for providing holistic support at school, family and community levels through which students with ASD could develop their own talents and integrate into the society.

Embracing Students for Who They Are

Children with ASD often struggle and feel overwhelmed when facing sudden changes. They may have strong emotional responses and are thus easily misunderstood as uncooperative. In view of their different ways in responding to difficulties, they need more understanding and support from others. For this reason, JC A-Connect has produced a series of animations about ASD. The series covers the challenges people with ASD may face and the support they may need, hoping to enhance public understanding of ASD.

Walking with Children with ASD in the Times of Pandemic

Apart from the existing support, the NGO partners of JC A-Connect have developed various online resources for children with special needs in face of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is hoped that these resources could support children with ASD and their families through this difficult time.
