Children with special educational needs (SEN) are often associated with learning disabilities, resulting in myths that they can never excel in any aspects. As a matter of fact, what defines them should be the potential they possess but not the grades they get at school. Caritas Jockey Club Artkids Studio puts emphasis on the significance of art to the development of dyslexic students, hoping to empower them to change how society perceives them. Taking part in the programme, students with SEN could unleash their creativity and show their exceptional works to the public in different places. It is hoped that the general public could discover the talents and unlimited possibilities of dyslexic children.
No work of art is “Wrong”
Believing in the possibilities that art brings to child development, Artkids Studio does not call participants by their names but “Artkids”. The programme provides different art workshops and training for students with SEN, ranging from drawing, ceramic to handcraft classes so as to cultivate their interest and elevate their motivation in learning. Artkids Studio holds a strong belief that there is no right or wrong in art, hence what they do is compliment and encourage students for their imagination and creativity. In this regard, Artkids are hoped to explore and express themselves fearlessly, letting them believe in themselves and see the unlimited possibilities in their future. The artworks of Artkids will be displayed in diverse places, including cafes, hotels and malls etc., so that the public could probe into the world of Artkids. Visitors are also welcome to buy the artwork they like as a support to Artkids.
Let Them Be Seen in Art
The programme, on one hand, enhances the confidence of the participants and dispel the public misunderstanding towards dyslexic students. On the other hand, helpers of Artkids Studio also grow together with Artkids in this programme.
“ I thought this project was really meaningful by the time I learned that “Artkids Studio” was helping students with SEN. I have three brothers and sisters with different issues, such as autism, Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder and special educational needs etc. As a result, they struggled with studies all the time. It would have been really fascinating if we had joined this programme when we were young.
- An Artdults (helpers of Artkids Studio)
I am so glad to learn that there are people who pay heed to the learning difficulties faced by school children through the programme, and at the same time, recognise the talents of dyslexic students as well as the importance of art.
I found this programme surprisingly fun working as an Artdult. Out of my surprise, there was a huge contrast between how they behaved at school and in Artkids Studio that they were always enthusiastic when they were in the programme. I was touched when I saw that both Artkids and Artdults had identified their strengths through the programme.
Despite the fact that I did not perform exceptionally well at school, I am content with what I am doing. It really feels good when you know what to fight for and know that others acknowledge your work.
