Comprehensive Care for the Elderly during the Epidemic
During the outbreak of COVID-19 in Hong Kong, many people have chosen to stay at home as a preventive measure. Among them, the underprivileged elderly and terminally-ill patients are especially stressful at home because of anxiety, insufficient resources, limited social contacts and a lack of physical exercise. Thanks to the sponsorship of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust COVID-19 Emergency Fund, Elderly Services of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) has initiated a new project namely the “Company in Adversity – Elderly Caring Project” in no time, serving the deprived elderly, particularly singleton elders, childless elderly couples and terminally-ill patients who have limited supports from the younger generation.
Showing Care While Delivering Boost-up Packs
“Company in Adversity – Elderly Caring Project” has kicked off in April 2020. With the participation of more than 25 frontline staff members and volunteers from Endless Care Services and Prestige Care Services for the Elderly under TWGH’s Elderly Services Section,boost-up packs were prepared and delivered to over 550 most deprived elderly within one week. These boost-up packs contained hygienic and protective products such as face masks, hand sanitizers, alcohol swabs and food supplies, together with a leaflet explaining the proper usage of these hygienic and protective products. These necessities not only eased the financial burden of the underprivileged, but also comforted them with love and care from the community. Many of the beneficiaries felt relieved upon the receipt of such tangible support and they expressed gratitude to TWGHs and HKJC for the boost-up packs.
With the support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust COVID-19 Emergency Fund, the Project also offered transportation allowance to deprived singleton elders, childless elderly couples and terminally-ill patients who must go to hospitals for medical consultations and treatments as well as receiving prescriptions from hospitals. By using this allowance, they could attend medical follow-up by point-to-point transportation to reduce the risk of infection.
Equipping Elders with Proper Precautions
Other than hygienic and protective supplies, two community education videos have been produced and published to promote precaution and health information in a delightful and interesting way. The videos also encourage positive thinking amongst the elderly and promote care to them.
